Rockstone Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates nubeculosus) is an extremely rare dart frog that was first described in 1982, and has not been observed since. The only specimen was obtained in northern central Guyana. Due to this singular specimen and observation the behavior, activity, population, lifespan, reproduction, and threats are unknown. In Latin "nubeculosus" means "covered with small clouds."[1]

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Its first finger is shorter than the second and there is not webbing present between the toes. The sole of its feet, skin on its abdomen, and the limbs are smooth, except the top of the thighs are rough. Its nostrils open horizontally. It lacks premaxillary and maxillary teeth. The snout-vent length is slightly less than 1in (0.96in). It has a head length of 0.32in. It has a head width of 0.31in. It possesses an ear drum that is half the diameter of its eye. The only observed specimen was brown with blue splotches. When allowed to dry after being preserved there were reddish brown areas that could indicate a reddish-brown coloration in a living frog. If it follows the pattern of Dendrobates genus it would experience sexual dimorphism where females would be larger than males.[1]

Habitat[edit | edit source]

The specific habitat is not known beyond the vegetation in the area of the type locality, near Rockstone, a town on the Essequibo River, lowland jungle.[2]
