A terrarium is an enclosure used for keeping and observing plants, animals, or both in a controlled environment.

Terrariums are defined by their primarily land-based ("terra") environment. Terrariums can take various forms, and simulate many different types of environments, like desert, temperate forest, marsh, or tropical rainforest.

Most often, the term terrarium is used to distinguish a controlled environment that primarily contains plants and other flora.
