"Fossorial" is an adjective used to describe animals that are adapted to digging or burying themselves. The term originates from Medieval Latin fossorius, meaning "used for digging," which in turn comes from Latin fossor ("digger"), derived from fodere ("to dig"). The term has been in use since at least 1836 to specifically describe animals with such adaptations.
