A primarily arboreal species Vicente's Poison Frog (Oophaga vicentei) can be found in humid tropical lowland forests. There are localized populations that can be found low on tree trunks and the ground.[1]

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Oophaga vicentei is approximately 0.75in to 0.79in long. The dorsal varies between mixtures of yellow, red, blue, green, and slate-colored. [1]

Geographic Range[edit | edit source]

O. vicentei can be found between 4 and 912m above sea level. It is endemic to Panama and can be observed Rio Cahuita in the west to to Rio Miguel de la Borda in the east.It can also be found in the Caribbean coastal lowlands, the costal divide near Tulu and Cero Tute in proximity of the Santa Fe National Park.[1]

El Valle de Antón[edit | edit source]

There was a subpopulation in El Valle de Antón, but that no longer seems to be the case.[1]

Reproduction[edit | edit source]

Reproduction takes place on arboreal vegetation. Upon successful breeding male adults will transport tadpoles to pools of water to terrestrial plants. The tadpoles will finish their development in said pools.[1]

Threats[edit | edit source]

Vicente's Poison Frog (Oophaga vicentei) was last ranked in 2018 as Endangered by the IUCN on its Red List. It was last evaluated in 2004 where it was data deficient and could not be ranked. It was described as Dendrobates vicentei in 1996 before being later being reclassified to the Oophaga genus. It's range is only 2193 mi² and is threatened due to human activity.
