Also known as the "Splashback Poison Frog" or "galacts", Adelphobates galactonotus is a terrestrial poison frog endemic to Brazil.

The IUCN classifies Adelphobates galactonotus as Least Concern (LC) based on the most recent assessment for the species in 2021.[1]

Description[edit | edit source]

Adult Adelphobates galactonotus reach up to 1.7 inches (42 mm) in size, making them the largest Adelphobates kept in captivity. Adult frogs occur in a variety of colors, including black, light blue, red, orange, yellow, cream and white - with or without black spots. Most individuals are uniformly black on their underside and show variation in the amount of coloration on their backs.[2]

Geographical Distribution[edit | edit source]

Adelphobates galactonotus occur in rainforest wetlands between the Amazon and Tapajós rivers in the Brazilian states of Pará, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, and Tocantins.[2]

Conservation[edit | edit source]

Despite the IUCN classification of Least Concern (LC), Adelphobates galactonotus have been frequent victims of illegal smuggling in recent history. Localized threats include deforestation caused by agriculture and logging, hydroelectric projects, gold mining, and the illegal pet trade.

Notably, all captive specimens in Europe, the United States, and Japan stem from illegal exports, as no legal export has ever been logged to the CITES Trade Database.

Threats[edit | edit source]

  • Agriculture & aquaculture
  • Hunting & trapping
  • Logging & wood harvesting
  • Mining & quarrying
  • Dams and water management
