Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. It is threatened by habitat loss, as well as other anthropogenic effects such as wildlife-vehicle collisions. Additionally, roadway traffic noise has impacted its auditory signals, causing it to adapt through multiple means, including changes in call frequency and timing.

When compared to other poison frogs the cauca poison frog has a limited homing ability to others who have been previously studied.
